PART 1 : BUILDING AND BUYING GUIDE IDEAS FOR VMWARE LAB

My old setup for all purpose lab

This article completely concentrate on how to build a VMware lab for your home testing. This lab is not only limited to VMware and also can be used for other technologies like Microsoft Windows, Linux or any other virtualization platform and for tutoring purpose. Now I give you some Info about my old home lab which I was using since many years and I use it to train my online students as well as some locality students and secondly used for gaining Proof of concept (POC). I was using my below configuration for all sort of trainings and for testing until I found this capacity is not enough now for further ventures, (Just a little tip and my secret: I and one of my friend purchased 2 same capacity Lab old White Boxes at a time so we can share them between us. Now like the last time this time as well we purchased 2 new same capacity server like same white boxes so we can have full-fledged labs and they can be shared together. Incase if you cannot afford, find a friend whom you can trust and invest/share Lab. In my case I have jumbo capacity now and if required I can borrow from a friend)

My old White Box configuration I purchased long back in end year 2012

Motherboard Asus A5a88-M EVO

CPU Processor AMD FX 6100 Six Core 3315 Mz

DIMMS/Memory/Ram Transcend JM1333KLN-4G4 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM (Total 16 GB)

SATA Hard Disk Drive/HDD Seagate internal 1 TB ST31000524AS

SATA SSD Transcend SSD 2.5 64 GB Internal Hard Drive

DVD Writer LG

Logitech Keyboard and Mouse K200

Cabinet + SMPS Circle 623

Monitor LG 18’’ Flatron E4202

UPS v-Guard Slender Plus 600

Wireless Router Dlink DIR-600L

This is my old configuration and when combined with my friend’s computer it is almost doubled. I don’t recall exactly how much it did cost me, but it was between something 50000 to 55000 INR (700$ - 800$).

And again coupled with I have my Laptop Dell N5010 purchased in 2010 with the capacity of i3 Processor, 8 GB Ram (upgraded), 500 GB HDD, almost every practical did for VMware vSphere 2, 3, 4 and it is still going on for other needs.

In the next blog I am going to show you my new Lab Server coupled with these one to fulfill my requirements. Feel free to add comments if you have any query don't hesitate to ask.
